What is Psychological Coaching and How is Different from Counselling?
Mental Health Coaching is a goal-oriented support experience that allows individuals to enhance their emotional and mental well-being, as well as their daily functioning and sense of purpose and connection in life. Coaching involves identifying obstacles and working in collaborative and professional relationships to develop the coping, self-care, and interpersonal communication skills that lead you forward in life - emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Unlike Counselling, Coaching focuses on present and future objectives and does not explore past issues and how these contribute to present functioning and well-being. Yet, similar to Counseling, there are various types of Coaches - Career, Grief, Mental Health, Sport, and Life and Wellness Coaches. Each aspires to assist individuals in their growth and capacity to feel more balanced, free, and fulfilled in specific areas of life. It is important to know that, while there are many types of Coaches, not all coaches are Counsellors so each will hold unique training and credentials.
As a Trauma and Mental Health Coach, I hold certifications in Grief, Trauma, and Mental Health - including ADHD. I also hold 18 years of experience and extensive training in these areas as a registered Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) in good standing. In addition to my counselling designation with the CCPA, I hold a Master’s Degree in Counselling, Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Para-linguistics, and Post-graduate Certifications as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP-I), with additional Certifications in Eating Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Misuse (CSAC), and as a Certified Advanced FLASH-technique (EMDR) Therapist. You can review my educational background here.
As a healing and growth practice, Coaching is valuable in a variety of settings such as private therapy practice, schools, and workplaces and is recognized as a service that helps clients grow personal understanding, wisdom, coping skills, and healthy lifestyle choices. Coaching is generally short-term, solution-based, collaborative, and client-centred, 6 months or less, and focuses on building the momentum to get you moving forward!
As a Trauma and Mental Health Coach, my goal is to do just that! In this warm, professional and accepting space, I support you to explore, process, and grow through the difficult, and sometimes distressing, emotions and thoughts that can come with traumatic experiences, significant life transitions, and concurrent mental health struggles such as anxiety, depression, disrupted sleep and nutrition. To help you develop the self-care practices and coping skills that align with your unique values and move you towards your goals for growth and a renewed sense of self, peace, and purpose.
