What are the differences and similarities between the CCC and RCC Credential?


Though viewed and sometimes discussed by therapists and insurers as unique, these two Canadian-recognized counselling designations are more similar than different and, to promote safe, ethical and effective care, are important credentials to look for when searching for a professionally certified and insured therapist.   

CCC, National - Canadian Credential

  • MA Degree must be in Counselling or related professional field (MC, MAC, MSW, MEd)
  • MA must be attained within a government recognized and approved institution  
  • Includes completion of 8-Core Counselling Courses in counselling/psychology per CCPA application outline
  • Includes 150-hours of Supervision under a qualified on-site counselling Supervisor, and
  • 75-hours of 'Direct Supervision' accrued during a practicum placement such as live observations, co-counselling, review of recorded sessions
  • Submission of applications from 2, non-peer, professional references
  • Sealed transcripts from MA institution
  • Completion of a clear criminal record check
  • Evaluation of credentials, practicum experience, and application
  • Acquisition of Professional Liability Insurance
  • Commitment to continued Professional Development in order to maintain CCC credential  
  • Review and adherence to Code of Ethics

RCC, Provincial - BC Credential

  • MA Degree must be in Counselling or related professional field (MC, MAC, MSW, MEd)
  • MA must be attained within a government recognized and approved institution  
  • Includes completion of 6-Core Counselling Courses in counselling/psychology per CCPA application outline
  • Includes 100-hours of Supervision under a qualified on-site counselling Supervisor, and
  • 25-hours of 'Direct Supervision' accrued during a practicum placement such as live observations, co-counselling, review of recorded sessions
  • Submission of applications from 2, non-peer, professional references
  • Sealed transcripts from MA institution
  • Completion of a clear criminal record check
  • Evaluation of credentials, practicum experience, and application
